Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongju City Sign an MOU on Attracting Investment of KRW 60 Billion from Companies Leading the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongju City plan to attract an investment of KRW 60 billion in the field of electric vehicles, a key p among futuristic cars, to foster their regions mainly d on the new growth industries and, in turn, gain dominance in the global market. 

At 02:00 p.m. of the 6th (Wednesday) at the main conference room of Gyeongju City Hall, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongju City signed a Memorandum of erstanding (MOU) to establish an electric vehicle manufacturing plant together with some 50 attendees including Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo, Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young, Chairman Jiang Dao Lin of China’s Jiangsu Jiankang Automobile, CEO Kang Yeong-gweon of Edison Motors, national assemblymen, and members of the provincial assembly.

The MOU states that Jiangsu Jiankang Automobile located in Jiangsu Province, China, and Edison Motors headquartered in Hamyang, Gyeongsangnam-do, will jointly invest a total of KRW 60 billion over five years from 2019 to 2023 to build a 1-ton electric cargo vehicle plant within the Geomdan Industrial Complex of Gyeongju, which will also contribute to creating quality jobs by recruiting 50 new young employees.

Jiangsu Jiankang Automobile, an affiliate of China’s Guoxuan Group, is a company located in Jiangsu Province of China that produces, manufactures, and sells automobiles. It is a well-pering company with a production capacity of 5,000 electric buses and 30 thousand electric trucks per year.

Edison Motors has made a splendid achievement by supplying a total of 150 electric buses, starting with its supply of 9 electric buses in Seoul in December 2010 and 23 battery exchange-type electric buses in Jeju in 2015. It received a technology royalty of USD 45 million from a state-owned company in India and is currently negotiating exports with the company. It is one of the “Small Giants” that has a production capacity of 1,300 electric vehicles per year. 

d on the MOU’s provision on setting up a joint venture, Jiangsu Jiankang Automobile and Edison Motors plan to manufacture about 2,000 units of 1-ton electric cargo vehicles before the end of the year and supply them to Korean logistics companies.

Electric vehicles, along with autonomous vehicles, are emerging as one of the central ps of futuristic cars in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It is also an industry that has great ramifications on other relevant industries.

Meanwhile, to increase jobs in the private sector and promote the local economy, Gyeongsangbuk-do has been committed to ing all of its resources on attracting investment for the new industries of the future, which has great growth potential and high value-added aspects. To this end, Gyeongsangbuk-do has preemptively responded to the changes in the landscape of new industries, including carbon fiber, titanium, vaccine, accelerator-d new drug, and secondary battery, in preparation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo stated that he would “ all of the provincial government’s capacity on creating jobs so that there would be no youths leaving the region because of lack of jobs.” He also stressed that he would work on “making the southern region, including Gyeongju, the center of the futuristic car part belt through the MOU.”
