Gyeongsangbuk-do Attracts Food Ingredient Companies Producing Tapioca to Sangju’s Hamchang Agro-Industrial Complex

Gyeongsangbuk-do and Sangju City plan to foster Sangju’s Hamchang Agro-Industrial Complex into a future hub of the food industry by attracting an investment of KRW 12 billion from food ingredient companies producing tapioca* used in beverages.

 * Tapioca: An ingredient made by thinly cutting and squeezing the roots of cassava grown in tropical regions to get rid of the juice and then grinding the remaining fiber in them    
 
At 10:00 a.m. of the 4th (Thursday) at Sarim Conference Room of Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Office, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Sangju City signed a Memorandum of erstanding (MOU) on establishing a food ingredient company that produces tapioca in the attendance of aro 20 people including Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo, Sangju Mayor Hwang Chun-mo, Chairman Yu Tong of China’s Boduo Group, CEO 
Jeong Seok-dong of Hanmirae Food, and members of the provincial assembly.

The MOU states that Boduo Group located in Hangzhou of Zhejiang Province in China and Hanmirae Food headquartered in Hamchang of Sangju will jointly invest* a total of KRW 12 billion over two years up to 2020 to establish a food ingredient plant for producing tapioca and create aro 120 jobs in the local economy.

China’s Boduo Group, located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, was ranked 108th in the list of China’s best-pering companies by China’s CCTV in 2016. Its main area of business is a restaurant franchise, running a total of 20 brands within China. It is a well-pering company that recorded revenue of KRW 1.2 trillion and aro 3,000 employees as of the end of 2018.

Hanmirae Food is a company that specializes in exports of seasoned laver products. It was foed in May 2013 and completed the construction of its plant in the Hamchang Agro-Industrial Complex of Sangju in July 2013. It also obtained an export license in China in July 2014 and set up stores at 1,200 branches of China’s local retail discount stores while exporting all of the seasoned laver it produces to China and Taiwan. In December 2018, it received the Export Tower Award for reaching the USD 10 million mark in exports as one of the best perers of the local food ingredient sector.

Through the joint investment, the two companies plan to establish a tapioca production plant by 2020 and supply the product as food ingredients to Korean beverage franchise companies while also exporting it to Japan and Southeast Asia.

Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo stated that “tapioca is one of the ingredients of milk tea that is seeing a continuous increase of demand in the global market and will contribute to securing the competitiveness of the food industry.” He also stressed that Gyeongsangbuk-do would “make utmost efforts to create a business-friendly environment so that companies could have a conviction for success in investing in the region.”
