Gyeongsangbuk-do to build a hydrogen fuel cell power plant complex worth KRW 325 billion in Sangju
- Gyeongsangbuk-do and Sangju-si signed an MoU for the investment with Korea East-West Power Co., Ltd., and Sangju Energy, Co., Ltd. -
- The project to invest KRW 325 billion in a 50 MW hydrogen fuel cell power plant complex between 2019 and 2021 -

On the 25th, at the Grand Conference Room of Sangju City Hall, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Sangju-si signed a memorandum of erstanding (MoU) for the development of a hydrogen fuel cell power plant complex. The signing ceremony was attended by Vice Governor for Economic Planning Jun Woo-yhun, Director Pyo Yeong-jun of Korea East-West Power Co., Ltd., President Lim Yun-cheol of Sangju Energy, Co., Ltd., and the provincial council and the city council members.
As expected to restore the dilapidated Cheongni General Industrial Complex, the project will see KRW 325 billion invested in the development of the 50 MW Sangju Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant Complex on a 66,000 m2 area from 2019 to 2021.
The annual production capacity of the complex is 411 GWh, which is enough to power aro 110,000 households with a monthly average usage of 300 kWh.
Hydrogen fuel cells are the environment-friendly source of new and renewable energy that produces electricity by mixing hydrogen from liquified natural gas (LNG) with oxygen from the atmosphere. It offers the benefit of high efficiency while producing no exhaust gas. Hydrogen fuel cell power plants are built even in downtown areas in Seoul and other cities. In addition, unlike photovoltaic or wind power generation, it is not restricted by time of day or natural environments.
The construction project is expected to require aro 500 workers and create more than 50 new jobs. Because of this, Sangju Energy has promised to retain the workforce and equipment from local providers first.
In addition, each year, special subsidies worth aro KRW 4.7 billion and aro KRW 30 million of basic subsidies will be granted to areas surroing the complex, which is expected to boost the local economy.
Vice Governor Jun said, “I hope that the hydrogen fuel cell power plant complex will serve as a catalyst to attract more businesses into the area and restore the Cheongni Industrial Complex. Moreover, Gyeongsangbuk-do will do its best to implement business-friendly policies to engage high-perance businesses into the area, create new jobs, and revitalize the local economy.
