POSCO Chemical to invest in negative electrode businesses in Pohang
- The KRW 250 billion investment will create 80 new jobs -
- The investment is expected to drive lot sales in Pohang Blue Valley and boost Pohang’s local economy -

Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to turn Pohang into an industrial hub for the secondary battery industry by clustering core part manufacturers.

On December 13, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Pohang-si signed a memorandum of erstanding (MOU) for the construction of negative electrode plants with POSCO Chemical, Co., Ltd. The signing ceremony was attended by Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheolwoo, Pohang-si Mayor Lee Gangeok, POSCO Chemical CEO Min Kyungjun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Council Chairperson Jang Gyeongsik, and business representatives.

er the MOU, POSCO Chemical will invest KRW 250 billion in the Pohang Blue Valley National Industrial Park between 2020 and 2021 to build new production facilities for artificial graphite negative electrodes used in secondary batteries.

The investment is expected to create 80 new jobs, drive lot sales in the industrial park, boost the local economy, and spur the growth of the materials industry.

Artificial graphite negative electrodes offer longer life cycles than natural graphite negative electrodes because of their stable crystal structure.

POSCO Chemical’s investment in Pohang’s negative electrode businesses will pave the way for the city’s transation into a central area for Korea’s secondary battery material. In fact, the industrial ecosystem in Pohang has been shifting its  from the steel industry to the advanced industries.

In 2018, EcoPro, a secondary battery bipolar electrode manufacturer, began to invest massive amounts in Pohang. On July 23, 2019, the government declared the Yeongilman Industrial Complex and the Pohang Blue Valley National Industrial Park as the “Next-Generation Battery Recycle Regulation-Free Special Zones.”

Gyeongsangbuk-do has been waging efforts to rebuild Pohang into a hub for the growth of the secondary battery industry by launching research and development projects for secondary battery materials and parts, training experts, and attracting businesses to build a secondary battery value chain.

Originally foed as Samhwa-Hwasung in 1963, POSCO Chemical has become one of Korea’s leading manufacturers of refractories and shaft tunnels over the last five decades. The company is the number one  supplier of quicklime to POSCO’s Pohang Steel Mill and Gwangyang Steel Mill. It also produces coal chemicals such as coal tar and light oil.

The company is transing itself into a global general chemicals and materials company by building on its existing businesses while pursuing high–value-added, forward-looking businesses such as secondary battery electrode businesses.

Governor Lee Cheolwoo said, “We thank POSCO Chemical, one of our local businesses, for its decision to invest sizable amounts in local industries, especially considering the recent recession of the local economy.”

He added, “we will not spare any administrative and financial support for businesses to build Gyeongsangbuk-do’s reputation as a business-friendly province.”
