Japan must immediately withdraw its baseless claims of sovereignty over Dokdo Island
- Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo, issues statement condemning the absurd remarks made by the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs -

On January 23, Gyeongsangbuk-do issued a statement strongly protesting the baseless remarks made by the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs who claimed Japan’s sovereignty over Dokdo Island. In its statement, Gyeongsangbuk-do demanded the Japanese government immediately withdraw its unjustified contention over the sovereignty of Dokdo Island, which it continues to do every year.

Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Hayashi Yoshimasa said in a speech on the current state of Japan’s foreign affairs at a regular session of the National Assembly, which commenced on January 23, that Dokdo Island, a rightful territory of the Republic of Korea, Belongs to Japan not only historically, but also under international law. He added, Based upon this position, we will be resolute in our response on this matter. This marks the tenth consecutive year (since 2014) the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs has claimed Japan’s sovereignty over Dokdo Island in a foreign policy speech.

Regarding this, Governor Lee Cheol-Woo said in a statement on January 23, The Japanese Foreign Minister must immediately withdraw the baseless claims regarding Japan’s sovereignty over Dokdo Island, which the Japanese government continues to repeat every year. He declared, As the Provincial Governor lawfully entrusted to oversee the administration of Dokdo, I stand united with the people of Gyeongsangbuk-do, and I am determined to protect Dokdo against any provocations that could potentially threaten the healthy cooperative relationship between the two countries.

The Governor also urged, Japan must abandon all attempts to distort history and pursue its unfounded ambition to illegally invade and occupy Dokdo, and set an exemplary example in promoting world peace by fulfilling its responsibility to history by helping restore good relations between both countries and its people.
