Gyeongsangbuk-do (Gyeongbuk) is set to actively promote the Donghae Coastal Line Train Blue Pass Project to generate new tourism demand and enhance the competitive edge of maritime tourism in the East Coast region, coinciding with the opening of the Donghae Line train in 2025.

The Donghae Coastal Line Train Blue Pass Project is a maritime tourism program that showcases various maritime tourism sites of the five cities and counties along the East Coast. It offers participants a diverse range of experiences, including maritime sports, such as surfing, yachting, and underwater diving, as well as opportunities to explore the region’s maritime history, culture, local festivals, and food. As a representative leading product marking the dawn of the East Coast railroad era, up to 50% of travel expenses will be given to the participants.

Gyeongbuk is set to launch Donghae Line Blue Pass Voluntour, a special program that combines travel and volunteer activities. Designed for volunteers who wish to contribute to the recovery of Yeongdeok, an East Coast region severely impacted by a large-scale forest fire, the program aims to encourage volunteer participation and revitalize the economy of the affected area.

The Voluntour was designed to help in the recovery of the region from crises, such as the destruction of the livelihood base and forest damage resulting from wildfires. Volunteers and travelers nationwide will take part in practical local reconstruction activities, offering an experience that transcends simple tourism. In addition to volunteer activities, participants will also have the opportunity to appreciate the value of nature and the significance of recovery by visiting representative maritime tourist sites in the region, such as Yeongdeok Blue Road and Goraebul Beach, and engaging in snow crab activities.

The province plans to launch unique maritime tourism programs, including 2-day and 3-day courses connecting five cities and counties, along with 4-day courses that include Ulleungdo tours.

Gyeongbuk will actively promote the year-round appeal of the renowned Gyeongbuk East Coast by utilizing the Donghae Line train to operate regional stay-type tourism courses, such as visiting maritime tourist attractions along the Gyeongbuk East Coast and experiencing maritime sports. The goal is to transform train travel into a future-oriented tourism infrastructure that connects the local nature, culture, and tourism industry, offering an experience that goes beyond simple tourism.

In addition, the province will operate a themed tour train on a trial basis as part of a strategic initiative, offering different themed spaces in the train, busking performances, and other unique entertainment options to attract various tourists.

As part of hosting APEC Gyeongju, the province will actively promote the Gyeongbuk East Coast to a global audience by offering a course for APEC participants (e.g., delegates, reporters, etc.).

In a strategic move last month, Gyeongbuk designated a travel agency and started full-scale tourist attraction activities to systematically promote the project. The program is open to all individuals and tour groups from the end of May to the end of November. Reservations and application inquiries can be made through the Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture & Tourism Organization, with relevant notice available on the organization’s official website.

The Director of the Gyeongbuk Maritime & Fishery Bureau said, We expect the Donghae Coast Train Line Blue Pass Project to be an important opportunity to revitalize the East Sea maritime tourism industry, which is visited by tourists all year round. We will make positive efforts to lead the development of the regional economy by developing various tourism products, such as Voluntour, to restore and revitalize daily life in areas damaged by large-scale forest fires.
