On the 9th, Gyeongsangbuk-do (Gyeongbuk)’s Uljin Pinetree Agroforestry System was listed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS).

From 2017 to 2022, Gyeongbuk has supported systematic resource surveys and conservation management projects for the agroforestry system with a total budget of KRW 1.8 billion. These efforts have become an important foundation to the listing as a GIAHS.

The Uljin Pinetree Agroforestry System, which was designated as the seventh National Important Agricultural Heritage in 2016, began preparations for listing as a GIAHS in 2018. It was listed as the first agricultural heritage in the province that was recognized worldwide after an on-site inspection by experts from the FAO Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) in May 2025.

The Uljin Pinetree Agroforestry System is a representative example of the coexistence of nature and people, a traditional agricultural heritage that has been maintained in harmony with the pine forest for over 500 years.

Residents formed an autonomous forest management organization called Songgye, and have maintained their livelihood and culture by collecting forest products, such as pine mushrooms, reclaimed mountain slope agriculture, promoting eco-tourism, and holding local festivals while preserving the forest ecosystem.

Songgye transformed the old Boboosang Path into a pine forest trail to preserve and manage the Agroforestry System continuously. They also operated forest guides, food trucks, taverns, and guesthouses, thus contributing to the creation of local jobs and increased income. It is uated as an exemplary case of practicing the value of sustainable agricultural heritage.

The Director of the Gyeongbuk Agriculture and Stockbreeding Distribution Bureau, said, The valuable efforts of the residents have maintained and preserved the pine forest, leading to the Uljin Pinetree Agroforestry System being registered as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. In the future, we will actively work to discover and preserve agricultural heritage to reflect the various values and public s of agriculture and rural areas, such as tradition, cultural heritage, and landscape.
