On the 19th, Gyeongsangbuk-do(Gyeongbuk) held a Post-APEC Strategy Briefing Session at the multipurpose hall of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office, and announced detailed plans for post-APEC projects to sustain the success of the APEC summit.

Gyeongbuk has focused all its administrative capabilities on successfully hosting the 2025 APEC Summit. At the same time, it is planning post-APEC projects and conducting research on key projects with the Gyeongbuk Research Institute and many experts in relevant fields.

Governor Lee Cheol-woo said, We will make the legacy of APEC a sustainable growth engine that will impact not only Gyeongju, but also the rest of Gyeongsangbuk-do with post-APEC projects. Tourism is already experiencing a boom with an increased number of tourists in Gyeongju and throughout Gyeongbuk, and we have been receiving investment inquiries from global hotel chains. Some regions are on the verge of producing tangible results.

Governor Lee Cheol-woo also emphasized, As the post-APEC project is launched in earnest, more tourists will visit Gyeongbuk. We will be preparing to accommodate them by discovering must-try restaurants and hotels and resorts.

Next is a detailed explanation of the post-APEC projects. First, regarding the cultural tourism sector, the success of K-culture and the Gyeongju APEC have significantly expanded the growth potential of Gyeongbuks cultural tourism industry; thus, Gyeongbuk plans to leverage Koreas most distinctive cultural heritage and tourism resources and become one of the top 10 global cultural tourism hubs.
To achieve this, Gyeongbuk will be developing the World Gyeongju Forum into a cultural Davos Forum that upgrades the competitiveness of Koreas cultural industry to serve as a bridgehead for global exchange and disseminate the Korean Wave. It will also establish the APEC Cultural Center as a historical landmark of the Gyeongju APEC and utilize it as a key venue for exchange and cooperation among APEC member countries.

Moreover, the Bomun Complex Renovation, which will improve the landscape and access road by installing APEC sculptures and establishing symbolic gardens for member countries, will transform the area into a future-oriented tourism complex that represents Korea. Furthermore, the APEC United Cities Council will be established to enhance Gyeongbuks urban competitiveness and brand power through cultural exchange and policy cooperation among the host cities.

In the AI economic and industrial sector, Gyeongbuk will promote AI and economic cooperation as a model for shared prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region in response to the full-fledged AI era. Under the vision of establishing a prosperous and happy AI future community in Korea through AI, Gyeongbuk plans to broaden its innovative policies, expanding its innovative policies on low birth rates, war, and the Gyeongbuk-type Resident Evacuation System to include AI in addressing issues in population care, disaster safety, and transportation logistics.

To achieve this goal, Gyeongbuk will support the vision of an AI future community by connecting data centers in Pohang, Gumi, Andong, and Yecheon to an AI highway, and enhancing AI talent development in Gyeongsan. Also, Gyeongbuk will lead the way in bridging the AI gap beyond Korea and among APEC member countries by opening the Asia-Pacific AI Center.

Moreover, the Gyeongju CEO Summit, a business platform for global corporations and major global investors, and the APEC Future Square, a digital landmark featuring AI media art at Gyeongju Tower, will be jointly promoted to maintain the momentum of the successful APEC event.

Finally, post-APEC projects will be carried out to achieve peace and prosperity, the foundation for a sustainable tomorrow. Gyeongbuk will first launch the National Population Policy Research Institute, which will disseminate the achievements of addressing the issues on low birth rates and war, and then propose the establishment of the APEC Population Policy Cooperation Committee that will jointly address demographic changes among APEC member countries.

Still, as the peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula is essential in achieving peace in the Asia-Pacific region and the world, Gyeongbuk plans to establish the Silla Unification Peace Garden, representing the historical significance of the unification of the three kingdoms, and the Future Korean Unification Center, with the aspirations of the entire nation.

Governor Lee Cheol-woo emphasized, In addition to the 10 major projects announced today, we are planning metropolitan projects, such as the united city model, so that the benefits of APEC’s success can be sustained throughout Gyeongsangbuk-do. We will do our best to leave a heritage of Korea and Gyeongsangbuk-do to future generations by continuously supporting post-APEC projects.
