“Yeongdeok Goeshi Village” provisionally designated as a National Folklore Cultural Heritage

- Cultural Heritage Administration to put Goeshi Village on a 30-day provisional designation, then confirm its decision following the Cultural Heritage Committee’s deliberation -

Gyeongsangbuk-do announced Cultural Heritage Administration’s recent decision to provisionally designate the “Yeongdeok Goeshi Village” as a National Folklore Cultural Heritage.

Over the years, Gyeongsangbuk-do has continued to direct its attention to turning cultural heritage assets officially recognized as cultural assets at the provincial level with outstanding historical, artistic, academic, or aesthetic value into nationally designated cultural heritage assets in order to promote the excellence of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s local cultural assets.

Specifically, over the past three years, Gyeongsangbuk-do has been successful in promoting a total of 45 assets, including the Daeungjeon Hall at the Bonghwangsa Temple in Andong-si, into nationally designated cultural heritage assets. Thanks to Gyeongsangbuk-do’s commitment to its local heritage, the Province now boasts two additional national treasures, 30 more treasures, three more historic sites, three more natural monuments, three more national intangible cultural heritage properties, and four more national folklore cultural heritage properties.

According to an announcement on May 3, 2021, by the Cultural Heritage Administration, the “Yeongdeok Goeshi Village,” which applied for its promotion as a nationally designated cultural heritage upon deliberation by the Gyeongsangbuk-do Cultural Heritage Committee in 2018 (at the 9th Architecture Sub-committee meeting), was provisionally designated as a National Folklore Cultural Heritage. Throughout this 30-day provisional period, the Administration will collate feedback from relevant stakeholders, and the Cultural Heritage Committee will deliberate on whether to confirm the Village’s status as a National Folklore Cultural Heritage.

“Yeongdeok Goeshi Village” is a traditional village and an aristocratic clan village originally built by the Nam clan from Yeongyang in 1630 (8th year of King Injo’s reign). For close to 400 years, the Nam clan has thrived in the Village. Goeshi Village is also known as the birthplace of Yi Saek (pen name: Mokeun/1328~1396), a renowned scholar during the late-Goryeo Dynasty period.

Inside, the Village features 17 cultural heritage buildings, including the head house of the Goeshi faction within the Yeongyang Nam clan (Gyeongsangbuk-do Folklore Property no. 75), a number of old houses, a Seodang (village school), pavilion, and Jaesa (ritual house), in addition to more than 20 undesignated traditional buildings. Overall, the Village has been hailed for preserving and handing down traditional customs and cultures, such as living culture, folk culture, religion, and rituals.

Most of the houses inside the Village follow the typical floor plan and format of aristocratic homes in the northern parts of Gyeongsangbuk-do. However, they do differ slightly in terms of layout and features depending on when they were built. As such, the houses in Goeshi Village have been recognized as important historical resources in regard to the research on the evolution and characteristics of housing arrangements across different eras in the Yeongnam region.

The Village also has a self-governing community association that includes Village residents. The association preserves and manages the Village’s tradition and history, while offering Hanok-stay programs to help visitors learn our traditional ethics, largely driven by Confucian values, and our traditional culture.

Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo said, “We will continue to be active in discovering valuable and excellent cultural assets among cultural heritage properties within the Province, and in promoting them as nationally designated cultural heritage assets. In doing so, we hope to raise the status of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s cultural assets and utilize them as resources for historical and cultural tourism opportunities.”
