On January 27, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Yeongju-si signed a memorandum of erstanding (MoU) for investment in a semiconductor/display materials plant. The signing ceremony was attended by Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Yeongju-si Mayor Jang Wook-hyeon, and SK Materials CEO Lee Young-wook.
SK Materials plans to invest KRW 20 billion over 3 years from 2021 to 2023, to construct a plant for manufacturing materials used in semiconductors and displays. The plant is expected to generate 200 new jobs, significantly contributing to the local economy’s revitalization and job creation in Gyeongsangbuk-do’s northern area.
Foed in 1982, SK Materials specializes in materials used in manufacturing semiconductors and displays. It became a part of the SK Group in 2016, sparking the company’s growth into an IT materials manufacturer with annual revenue of KRW 955 billion.
In collaboration with global semiconductor materials companies, SK Materials ersified its product portfolio by establishing
SK Trichem, which produces precursors, and SK Showa Denko, making materials for semiconductor manufacturing. The company also leads semiconductor miniaturization and the materials industry in general, which has enjoyed growing demand with the spread of 3D NAND flash memory.
By developing and producing key materials for semiconductors and displays, SK Materials plays a pivotal role in the materials/parts/equipment industries, the growth drivers that Korea has pursued as part of its national goals. The new investment is expected to propel Gyeongsangbuk-do’s growth as the center of the materials and parts industries in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.
In addition, for the first time in Korea, SK Group’s eight members, including SK Materials, joined Renewable Energy 100 (RE100)*, which requires participants to source 100% of their energy consumption from renewable sources to support Korea’s zero-carbon policy.
* Requires participating companies to produce goods using power generated from renewable energy sources only
Meanwhile, Yeongju-si won third prize in the
2020 Business Environment Excellent Region uation organized by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in recognition of its success in attracting large-scale investments from Bearing Art and other businesses with its aggressive marketing strategies, such as revisions to local ordinances aimed at expanding subsidization.
Governor Lee Cheol-woo said, “I would like to thank SK Materials for deciding to invest in semiconductor and display materials manufacturing facilities in these trying times. With the Fourth Industrial Revolution projected to usher in a booming period for the semiconductor industry, I am confident that SK Materials’s investment in the semiconductor materials industry will significantly contribute to revitalizing the local economy.”
“We will spare no support in realizing our citizens’ wishes and ensuring successful investment by SK Materials,” Mayor Jang Wook-hyeon noted, “I hope that the investment will be a source of hope and consolation for citizens going through difficulties brought about by COVID-19.”
“I would like to thank Gyeongsangbuk-do and Yeongju-si for their efforts in the MoU signing despite economic difficulties caused by the pandemic,”President Lee Young-wook said, and added, “SK Materials will do its best to ensure that the investment leads to the company’s growth and the happiness of all local communities and citizens.”
