Gyeongbuk announced on the 6th that it signed a memorandum of erstanding (“MOU”) with Yeongdeok-gun and Yeongdeok Marine Cable Car Co., Ltd. (“YMCC”) at the Yeongdeok County Office on investment of KRW 37.7 billion in the “Yeongdeok Marine Cable Car Project.”
YMCC will invest KRW 37.7 billion in the Ganggu-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun area by 2021 to implement the marine cable car project, which includes the construction of a 1.3 km long one-way cable, upper and lower plats, and commercial and convenience facilities.
The project aims to create a new landmark in Yeongdeok that connects Samsa Marine Park, Ganggu Port, and Haeparang Park, maximizing Yeongdeok’s natural beauty.
Recently, local governments in Korea have been promoting marine cable car projects in competition because such projects attract many tourists. In fact, the marine cable cars in Tongyeong (Gyeongnam Province), Yeosu (Jeonnam Province), and Busan play a significant role as a representative tourist destination, attracting 1.5–2 million tourists annually.
Gyeongbuk Province declared 2020 as the “Visit Daegu and Gyeongbuk Year” and is actively exerting efforts to create jobs through the tourism industry that has great employment effects. The present investment is expected to contribute greatly to local tourism and the economy, along with a series of recent investment plans in Yeongdeok, including the Samsa Amusement Resort and Best Western Hotel.
Cheolwoo Lee, governor of Gyeongbuk Province, said, “This MOU is meaningful at this time that the local tourism industry is feared to be depressed because of the recent COVID 19 outbreak. We hope that the marine cable car will become another representative attraction of Yeongdeok, along with the representative food (Yeongdeok king crab), Yeongdeok Sunrise Park, and Blue Road.” Moreover, he stated, “Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to exert all-out efforts to create jobs through the tourism industry in the future.”
Gyeongbuk Province and Yeongdeok County expect the project to induce KRW 84.7 billion in production and 1,765 jobs by attracting more than 1 million cable car passengers a year. In addition, a project to create a livestock Blue City was recently designated as a state-fing project, and a project to expand the wide-area transportation network, such as the Pohang-Yeongdeok Expressway, is scheduled. All these projects will serve as an opportunity for Yeongdeok to become the best tourist destination in the East Sea coast.
