On November 17, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Yeongju-si held a grobreaking ceremony for the new high-tech bearing manufacturing facilities in Bangu Specialized Agro-industrial Complex. Aro 100 representatives, including Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Yeongju Mayor Jang Wook-hyeon, Bearing Art Co., Ltd. CEO Song Young-soo, and Gyeongsangbuk-do council members, attended the ceremony.

The event ed with a project progress report at the project site within the complex, followed by a grobreaking ceremony and a visit to Bearing Art’s second Yeongju plant completed in October this year.

On September 9, 2019, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Yeongju-si, and Bearing Art signed a memorandum of erstanding (MOU) to build high-tech bearing manufacturing facilities by investing KRW 300 billion over 5 years.

The 5-year investment (2020–2024) is expected to create 500 new jobs, significantly boosting the local economy in the province’s northern part.

Bearing Art Co., Ltd. is an affiliate of Iljin Group that manufactures industrial bearings and bearings used in automotive power transmission systems. The company plans to invest in building new manufacturing facilities for high-tech bearings, for which Korea mostly relies on imported products. The investment is seen to propel the company’s endeavors to develop new technologies and markets.

In all industries, bearings are used as core components and serve as the backbone for Korea’s industrial growth. High-tech bearings emerge as one of the core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution sectors, such as high-tech automobiles, high-speed trains, space and aviation, and robots. As such, Korea needs to build its technical expertise in the bearing industry and initiate the preparation for future changes in the frontline industries.

In addition, Yeongju offers well-developed railroad and transportation networks, as well as excellent access to the Seoul Capital Area. It also hosts various “anchor companies,” such as Novelis Korea, SK Materials, KT&G, and Bearing Art, raising the city’s potential for attracting related businesses.

The High-Tech Bearing National Industrial Complex will rise on a 1.36 million sqm area in Yeongju in the target year 2027, with a KRW 311.6 billion investment. The complex is set to create a material/part/equipment value chain consisting of Bearing Art, the High-Tech Bearing Testing and Assessment Center, and the Lightweight Material Technology Center.

Governor  Cheol-woo said, “The bearing industry is one of Korea’s backbone industries. We will foster the domestic bearing industry as a future growth engine for Gyeongsangbuk-do to mitigate reliance on imported products and work with research centers to provide full support for the Korean bearing industry to carve out its presence in the global market.”
