On November 18 (Wednesday), at the Gyeongju City Hall, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongju-si held a signing ceremony for the Memorandum of erstanding (MOU) for the construction of the Gyeongju Clean Energy Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powerplant. The ceremony was attended by Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Gyeongju-si Mayor Joo Nak-young, and members of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Council and the Gyeongju City Council.

The Gyeongju Clean Energy Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powerplant will be built from 2020 to 2014 with a KRW 710 billion investment in the Gangdong Industrial Complex in Gangdong-myeon, Gyeongju-si. The powerplant is expected to boost the hydrogen economy and mark the full-fledged launch of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s Green New Deal Policy. Moreover, the powerplant boasts of the largest power generation capacity in Korea at 100.32 MW. Each year, the powerplant will produce 808,499 MW of power, which is enough to provide power to 220,000 (four-member) households for a year.

The construction of the Gyeongju Clean Energy Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powerplant will employ more than 1,000 workers during the project, and the powerplant itself is expected to create more than 60 full-time jobs. In addition, er the Act on Assistance to Electric Power Plants-Neighboring Areas, standard subsidies of KRW 600 million (KRW 30 million × 20 years) and special subsidies of KRW 10.7 billion will be provided within a 5 km radius from the powerplant site.

The hydrogen fuel cell power generation is in alignment with the government’s efforts for the transition to clean and safe energy. It uses liquefied natural gas (LNG), meaning it does not release little pollutants, and is widely used in large cities in the Seoul Capital Area. It also offers a wide range of benefits over conventional power generation methods.

The hydrogen fuel cell power generation produces electricity by combining hydrogen from LNG and oxygen collected from the atmosphere. The method produces no exhaust gas and, unlike photovoltaic or wind power generation, is capable of producing power regardless of time and natural environment.

Governor Lee Cheol-woo said, “The MOU signed today marks the beginning of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s Green New Deal Policy and will contribute to the current administration’s hydrogen economy policy.”In particular, he added, “The construction of the fuel cell powerplant will help us boost the competitive edge of the Korean hydrogen industry, and Gyeongsangbuk-do will commit itself to creating jobs, revitalizing the local economy, and improving local residents’ welfare.”
