- Final international certification at the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 2025 -
- Upon final certification, Mungyeong to become the first in Gyeongsangbuk-do (8th in Korea) to earn Wetland City Accreditation of the Ramsar Convention -

Gyeongsangbuk-do announced that the Mungyeong Doline Wetland has made it to the 3rd round of candidate sites from Korea for the Wetland City Accreditation of the Ramsar Convention, led by the Ministry of Environment.

Mungyeong Doline Wetland, which has been selected as a candidate site, is scheduled to receive final certification at the 15th Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 2025.

* Ramsar Convention: An international convention adopted in Ramsar, Iran, on February 2, 1971, officially titled the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Korea joined in 1997).

Mungyeong Doline Wetland is a treasure trove of biodiversity, home to 932 animal species, nine of which are endangered. It became a nationally protected wetland by the Ministry of Environment in 2017 due in large part to its scarcity and value worldwide featuring a rarely seen doline terrain.

The Wetland City Accreditation of the Ramsar Convention is an international certification system for cities or villages in close proximity to wetland conservations with exemplary track records in conserving and utilizing wetlands wisely.

The system was jointly proposed by Korea and Tunisia at the 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 2015, and currently, 43 wetland cities in 17 countries have been certified.

Korea has seven Wetland Cities, including the Upo Wetland in Changnyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, Amsan Yongneup in Inje, Gangwon-do, Dongbaekdongsan Wetland in Jeju, and Suncheon Bay Tidal Flat in Jeollanam-do, which were certified in 2018, and also Gochang Ungok Wetland in Jeollabuk-do, Seocheon Tidal Flat in Chungcheongnam-do, and Mulyeongari Oreum in Seogwipo, which were certified in 2022.

Once certified as a Ramsar Wetland City, the city can use Ramsars unique certification trademark (brand) to advertise local agricultural and marine products, eco-tourism programs, etc., and access government funds to help not only preserve the local wetland environment, but also develop an infrastructure more conducive to eco-tourism.

Director of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Environment and Forest Resources Bureau said, The recent string of climate crises are telling us it’s time for a major paradigm shift in our environmental policies. Everything needs to be of the environment, by the environment, and for the environment. Mungyeong becoming a candidate site will lay a great foundation for Gyeongsangbuk-do to transition into a more eco-friendly and eco-driven Province. He added, Gyeongsangbuk-do plans on doing everything within its power to help Mungyeong get its accreditation as a Wetland City.
