Gyeongsangbuk-do has a number of exciting festivals lined up across the Province this autumn, starting with the Chuseok holiday in September and all the way through the month of October. Some new, some old, these events give both locals and returning family members something special to enjoy during the much-anticipated long holiday.

First, on September 29, our largest national holiday, Chuseok, the 2023 Samgang Festival will kick the autumn festival season off for Gyeongsangbuk-do at the Samgang Cultural Complex in Yecheon.

This 3-day festival, ending October 3, is all about Retro+Newtro. Programs will blend the past and present, giving travelers a chance to wind down for the holidays like the olden days, like our grandparents and their grandparents.

From storytelling sessions to magic shows, bubble shows, and busking concerts, the Festival plans on having something for absolutely everyone. The most notable programs are expected to be the Bobusang Sports Day and Samgang Golden Bell Quiz. Traditional culture, crafts, and costumes, as well as food and local produce, will be available at the Samgang market for people to buy and take home.

On October 2, the 2023 Andong Maskdance Festival, which is an honorary signature festival of Korea (designated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), will kick off its 8-day journey.

Similar to last year, dance troupes will get opportunities to meet the audience and interact with travelers much closer to the old town center, the old Andong train station site, and the maskdance performance hall. 11 troupes from ten countries are set to deliver splendid performances under this year’s theme, Radiant Blossoming Mask and Maskdance, and compete in a World Mask Play Competition, join a Bitalmin Nanjang performance, and participate in the World Creative Mask Contest.

The Festival is expected to entertain the eyes and ears of visitors to the Festival with a diverse range of programs designed to engage the audience with events involving shopping arcades in the old city center and other linked programs and exhibitions.

Starting with an evening ceremony the night before the Festival on October 1, the opening ceremony on October 2 will feature a performance by the winning team of the 2022 World Mask Play Competition, a performance by a mascot troupe, a Talchum and Pangut performance by the traditional entertainment troupe Cheonji, a drone light show, and some fireworks. A fireworks display will invite the participating groups to meet the audience, and the opening ceremony will end with a Daedong Nanjang performance.

On October 6, the 2023 Cheongdo Persimmon Festival gets underway as well. To showcase the delicious flavor and convenience of Cheongdo’s seedless Persimmon, the only one of its kind in Korea, the Festival will offer a variety of content for all age groups.

Programs include the Mirror Zone for children, a Treasure Hunt to find the Golden Persimmon, a Fishermen and the City program, an archery program, a fashion show with garments dyed using Persimmon, the world’s longest Persimmon peeling contest, and a Persimmon stacking game, and a Persimmon rolling race. The Persimmon Festival also features the Cheongdo World Comedy and Art Festival, adding even more fun and laughter to the event.

Meanwhile, the 20th Yeongcheon Bohyeonsan Starlight Festival is set to begin on October 7 (3-day festival). Visitors who make their way to Yeongchoen, a city known for its clear skies, can look up into the glittering stays in the Milky Way at the Bohyeonsan Observatory and Astronomical Science Museum, which is home to the largest (1.8m) astronomical telescope in Korea.

This year, the Festival has a variety of programs focused on Mars, including the Mars Sweeper and Asteroid Mining programs, and a special lecture on Mars from Moon Kyung Soo, a scientist and explorer with a popular channel on YouTube. Another lecture on constellations gets underway with the audience lying down and looking up into the night sky, which could be a great chance for children who rarely have a chance to see stars in the city to see and learn about the cosmos.

In addition to these festivals, Gyeongsangbuk-do has a number of smaller, local events that might feel more unique and authentic this autumn. The list of micro festivals in 2023 includes the Yeongju Museom Village Wooden Bridge Festival and Seongju Gayasan Golden Fields and Grasshopper Festival.

The Yeongju Museom Village Wooden Bridge Festival and the 2023 Seongju Gayasan Golden Fields and Grasshopper Festival both start on October 7 and end the next day.

Hosted by the locals in Museom Village (Munsu-myeon), the Yeongju Museom Village Wooden Bridge Festival is a unique event that highlights the life and death of people using Museom Village, its wooden bridge, old houses, and white sandy beach.

Authentic programs such as a traditional wedding, a traditional bier procession, the wooden bridge performance, an immersive healing program with Museom, an open Village concert, and a Village tour event will give visitors plenty of things to do, whereas a food market serving traditional party dishes from the Kim and Park clan will give people plenty of food to eat.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Seongju Gayasan Golden Fields and Grasshopper Festival - themed Catch those Grasshoppers! Enjoy an Autumn Picnic! - gets underway at the Eoullim Madang in Suseong-ri, Suryun-myeon, Seongju-gun.

The Festival could be a great choice for families with children thanks to a list of eco-friendly and unique programs, such as grasshopper hunting, sweet potato harvesting, catfishing, rice cake making, and rice cake pounding, as well as family sporting events and a singing contest.

The Director of Culture, Tourism and Sports of Gyeongsangbuk-do said, Starting this Chuseok holiday and throughout all of October, were offering a string of festivals across our Province. We hope that people returning home to visit family and other travelers can come and enjoy our festivals and possibly buy local products, which are excellent in quality.
