Gyeongsangbuk-do announced that the Songnisan Mountain Dullegil trail across Sangju and Mungyeong, which skirts around the Songnisan National Park, has been designated as a national forest trail by the Korea Forest Service.

* Announced by the Korea Forest Service on November 8

The National Forest Trails, designated and announced by the Director of the Korea Forest Service for forest trails that require better management due to their high ecological, historical, and cultural value, are uated with an on-site inspection and deliberation process led by the Forest Welfare Committee of the Korea Forest Service in accordance with the designation criteria.

The Songnisan Dullegil, which was designated as the nations 9th national forest trail, received KRW 5.2 billion from 2013 to 2022 in total investments, and it meanders across a vast region. The 208.6km route connects the Dullegil trail surrounding Songnisan National Park, then passes through a dozen towns and villages from Sangju and Mungyeong in Gyeongsangbuk-do to Boeun and Goesan in Chungcheongbuk-do.

※ Trail distance: Gyeongsangbuk-do 71.9km (Sangju 33.2, Mungyeong 38.7) / Chungcheongbuk-do 136.7km (Boeun 63.5, Goesan 73.2)

The trail passes some beautiful and famous mountains such as Songnisan (Cheonwangbong Peak and Munjangdae), Huiyangsan Mountain, and Juheulsan Mountain. It also has a healthy forest ecology with various animal and plant species native to the area. Thousand-year-old temples such as Beopjusa Temple and Bongamsa Temple buried deep in the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range add extraordinary historical and cultural value to the Songnisan Trail, and it is part of the Yeongnam-daero (via Mungyeong Saejae, etc.), a famous road used during the Joseon Dynasty. The trail is particularly rich in diverse and valuable resources, including natural recreational forests, natural monuments, valleys, and waterfalls that gush water year-round.

Songnisan Dullegil is a long-distance walking trail spanning 208km, connecting two provinces and four cities and counties, along with the scenery that coexists in harmony with its invaluable and symbolic ecological resources. The trail earned high marks in the uation process for its location, right in the middle of the country, its easy access, and excellent inter-regional connectivity.

This latest designation is expected to yield positive results as Songnisan Dullegil becomes a more recognizable brand across the country. This will give the Province a chance to promote some of its world-class forest tourism resources, establish itself as the best place to heal and recuperate, and yield other positive effects such as revitalizing rural areas and improving public health.

Director of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Province Environment and Forest Resources Bureau said, To improve the quality of our Songnisan Dullegil trail, now a national forest trail, we protect the surrounding forest ecosystem and take care of the forest trail in a more consistent and better-organized way. This can help us offer the best services to our visitors and give them a chance to enjoy our forest trails comfortably and safely.
