Starting from March this year, the limit imposed on the number of visitors to Dokdo Island, located off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula, will be removed and people going to Koreas lonely island will receive honorary citizenship.
Ulleung-gun (Ulleung County), Gyeongsangbuk-do (North Gyeongsang Province) and Dokdo Administrative Office announced last Thursday (Jan 7) that they have enacted an ordinance transferring to Ulleung-gun full rights to administer the island as decided by the Cultural Heritage Administration.
The new ordinance contained specified procedures regarding enter the island, imposing visitor fees, extending tour locations and issuing certificates of honorary citizenship. Those interested in citizenship as a souvenir must apply beforehand.
The limits placed on the total number for visitors to Dokdo per day, which is currently a maximum of 1,880, will soon be removed. However, there will still be a limit on landing at Dong-do wharf at the eastern part of Dokdo, since it can only accommodate 470 people at once. Dokdo Island is composed of two small rocky islands, Dongdo (East Island) and Seodo (West Island) surrounded by other islets.
Photo: Korea Tourism OrganizationIn May and June, during the breeding season of seabirds, access to the island will be limited to six times per day. Helicopters to the island will be strictly forbidden from April to June except in case of emergency.
No specific details were drawn up for entrance fees despite the provision that makes clear the rights of local government. “Given the nature of Dokdo and its unique status we have no plans to collect fees for now,” said Kim Myung-ho, one of the officials at Dokdo Administrative Office. “Nonetheless, the ordinance has laid a legal basis to collect fees to take care of the island better in the long run.”
