Gyeongju city held the proclamation ceremony of Yangdong village’s inclusion to the World Heritage list with more than 1,000 citizens and artists present at the playground of Yangdong elementary school in Gangdong-myeon. The ceremony was held on August 28 after it was announced that Yangdong village’s has been officially registered as a World Heritage site by the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris, France.
Yangdong village is an historic place surrounded by Seolchang Mt. in northern Gyeongju city, where intangible heritage artifacts like seasonal customs and collections of prose and works of Confucianist scholars from the Joseon Dynasty period have been passed down from generations to generations as a cultural legacy.
Since Yangdong village’s registration as a World Heritage site, Gyeongju city came to retain three places (Yangdong village, Sekguram cave and Bulguksa) among the 10 places registered as World Heritage sites by UNESCO in Korea. With these feats, we can say that Gyeongju city is truly an historic and cultural city.
The proclamation ceremony consisted of commemorative rites by representatives of Wolseong Son and Yeogang Yi, the head families at Yangdong village, and Gayageum Byeongchang by Ju Yeong-hui, intangible cultural assets, No. 19.
Yi Geon-mu, minister of the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea, said, “Yangdong village’s registration as a UNESCO World Heritage site is meaningful in the Confucian culture of the Joseon Dynasty period, and needs to be preserved for and transmitted to the future generation.”
In the meantime, the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea plans to actively support the village by establishing mid and long term preservation strategies with the help of Gyeongju city, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Beginning with this proclamation ceremony, Gyeongju city plans to establish and carry out a tourist management project, considering the villages capacity for sustainable preservation and development.
Towards this end, the city plans to complete the construction of ▲house maintenance 20 units ▲maintenance of infrastructure in the village (waterway and watercourse) ▲relic pavilion ▲public ination center ▲parking lot in August 2011 by investing working funds of 8.957 billion won (government expenditure 6,270,000,000 won, local expenditure 2,687,000,000).
choi Yang-sik, the mayor of Gyeongju city, declared, “All of Gyeongju citys people take pride in Yangdong village’s inclusion into the World Heritage list by UNESCO. It represents Gyeongju’s value as an historical global city. We will have to help maintain the reputation of this historic cultural city in Korea via cultural exchanges with other historic cultural cities in Asia and Europe in the near future.
