Gyeongsangbuk-do (North Gyeongsang Province) will hold a special seminar on Dokdo aimed at reaffirming Koreas ownership of its easternmost islands and promoting public awareness and interest in the issue. The seminar is slated to open at 2 pm on Thursday (Feb. 22) at the Gyeongsangbuk-do Government Building in Daegu.
In the same vein, a special exhibition, Dokdo, Our Land, will be held on Feb. 23-March 3 at the Daegu Citizen Center.
Co-hosted by Gyeongsangbuk-do and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Development Institute, the seminar titled “Ways to Consolidate Koreas Ownership of Dokdo and Boost Ulleung-do (island)s Economy” is open to provincial residents, public officials and Dokdo-related think tanks and groups. Participants attending the seminar will be offered a free booklet and DVD on Dokdo.
The first part of the seminar includes the screening of a DVD ing Japans forceful annexation of Dokdo at the beginning of the 20th century. In the DVD, scholars outline the inaccuracies in Japans claims to the island. Professor Hosaka Yuji of Sejong University will then make a presentation about Dokdo ownership and current Korean-Japanese relations. A graduate of Seouls Korea University, he has authored and translated several books on the subject.
In the second part, the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Development Institutes Ulleungdo-Dokdo Development Committee will lead the seminar titled “Ways to Boost the Economy of Ulleungdo and Dokdo.” A number of academics are scheduled to speak about the two islands ecological characteristics, flora, teas, sustainable tourist industry and others.
Meanwhile, in the special exhibition, old maps and s verifying Koreas sovereignty over the island as well as three-dimensional images of marine-geological features, underwater photos of fauna and scenes of Dokdo from all four seasons will be on public display. Visitors will be presented a free booklet about Dokdo.
With various materials provided by the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute, the Camouflaged Troops of Dokdo, the Korea Content Export Ination System, the Dokdo Museum, photographers and other entities, the exhibition is expected to draw many visitors.
