The 8th Harbin Snow and Ice Festival -- one of the worlds largest ice shows along with the Quebec Ice Festival, Canada, and the Sapporo Snow Festival, Japan -- opened in China on Friday (Jan. 5).
Organized by a Korean event planner in this official Korea-China Friendship Year, replicas of Korean structures spice up the festival.
Set up on 120 thousand pyeong (about 396 thousand square meters) of land on the banks of the Songhua River, the festival features ice replicas of Koreas most representative structures, including Gwanghwamun (the main gate to the Joseon Dynastys royal palace Gyeongbokgung), Gyeonghoeru (a two-story lakeside pavilion in Gyeongbokgung) and -- from the Silla Dynasty -- Cheomseongdae (an observatory) and Seokguram Grotto (a Buddhist shrine).
Ice statues of Admiral Yi sun-shin, King Sejong and independence leader General Kim Jwa-jin stand in front of the famous Gyeongju temple Bulguksa. Also, a replica of another Independence activist, An Jung-geun, was erected in front of a replica of Harbin Station, where in 1909 he assassinated Ito Hirobumi, Japans er resident-general of Korea who had pushed through the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty of 1907 .
The theme song of Daejanggeum (Jewel in the Palace), a historic TV drama revolving around the first female royal physician in the Joseon Dynasty, wafted over the festival grounds throughout the day. Lee Young-ae, who starred in the pan-Asian hit appeared at the festival, drawing a huge crowd.
Near the replica of Gwanghwamun stood the Korea-China Friendship Tower, a 60-meter-tall tower made of ice. A searchlight at the top of the tower illuminated the site.
The replicas of Koreas historic structures matched the exact proportions of the originals.
According to the organizers, 120 thousand cubic meters of ice were used to build the replicas for the festival.
Russian, Chinese and other nations structures were also replicated.
