LG Electronics has launched mass production of its fourth plasma display panel (PDP) module production line by adopting the most up-to-date six-panel processing technology for the first time in the world.
The worlds second biggest PDP module maker said on Tuesday (Aug. 30) that it gave a kick start to mass production on its fourth PDP module line A3 after two months of pilot production since July at the Gumi complex in North Gyeongsang Province.
With the launch of mass production on A3, LG Electronics is expected to overtake Samsung SDI and emerge as the No. 1 PDP module maker in the fourth quarter of this year. We will dominate not only the PDP module sector but also the PDP TV segment by 2006, LG Electronics spokesperson Kim Gyeong-whan said.
A3 is the first PDP module fabrication establishment in the world to be designed with eight-panel processing technology, but it will begin with six-panel processing technology as the huge PDP glass substrates used as feed material for the state-of-the-art fabrication is not available at the moment from subcontractors, including Asahi Glass of Japan, it said.
In the initial phase, A3 will turn out 120,000 PDP modules _ based on 42-inch size _ per month with the six-panel processing technology. The monthly production capacity will gradually grow to 160,000 panels when the eight-panel processing technology comes on line later next year.
The fourth production line, in which LG Electronics invested a total of 660 billion won, will boost the companys monthly gross PDP production capacity to 350,000 panels, based on the 42-inch size, adding to the present combined capacity of 190,000 panels of A1 and A2 lines.
LG Electronics has improved productivity from the originally anticipated 165,000 panels to 190,000 by achieving faster turnaround time and realizing yield loss through defects of less than 10 percent of monthly production.
In addition to opting for a shift to greater multi-panel processing technology, the electronics giant is widening the application of the cost-effective single scan technology.
Single scan technology is regarded as an opportunity to win the competition in costs as it allows production cost reductions of roughly 20 to 50 percent compared to conventional dual scan products.
LG Electronics adopted single scan technology in June last year, commercialized the worlds first 42-inch single scan PDP TVs in July, and developed the worlds first 50-inch XGA PDP module that incorporates the cutting-edge technology last April. Single scan technology is applied to 99 percent of all its PDP panel sizes.
Samsung SDI is currently the worlds largest manufacturer of PDP modules with a 31 percent market share, followed by LG Electronics and Matsushita Electric Industrial of Japan. In the PDP TV segment, Matsushita, selling under the Panasonic brand, tops the list, followed by LG and Samsung Electronics.
