With no end in sight for the pandemic, campsites across Gyeongsangbuk-do, where people can enjoy a quiet break with family members without being disturbed by others, have become popular travel destinations.

Gyeongsangbuk-do has 20 campsites, including seven public and 13 private venues, scattered along its east coast. Some popular sites are bringing in people not only on the weekends, but also on weekdays.

In particular, the public campsite at Yeongdeok Goraebul Beach (Goraebul People Campsite) has enjoyed a steady rise in popularity since it opened back in May 2017.

The Campsite (175,000㎡) features 148 lots for travelers looking to spend the night in a tent inside a refreshing pine forest (110 lots), enjoy some auto camping (13 lots), or a caravan (25 lots). It also offers access to a sculptured observatory, a deck overseeing the sea, a coastal promenade, and other amenities (showers, cooking area, and toilets).

The secret to Goraebul People Campsite’s success has been its beautiful natural environment that includes a beautiful beach and a dense pine forest, as well as a variety of different camping options.

The special caravan, some designed to look like a deer and others like an elephant, is extremely popular among travelers - booking a caravan is almost as difficult as winning the lottery.

Meanwhile, the Najeong Goun Sand Beach Auto Campsite, which opened last month in Gampo-eup, Gyeongju-si, is equipped with 32 mobile caravans and nine auto camping units inside a beachside parking lot (11,200m²).

Campers are already excited about the news that the parking lot at Najeong Goun Sand Beach, which was known already as a great spot for auto camping (car camping), has now been transformed into an auto campsite. Although the Campsite officially opens in March, it is taking reservations from future travelers.

The Pohang Public Leisure and Camping Site, Gyeongju Oryu Campsite, Uljin Gusan Auto Campsite, Yeomjeon Beach Campsite, and Ulleung Public Leisure and Camping Site, which all sit along the east coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do, ask travelers to book their spots in advance, particularly on weekends where campsites for walk-in customers may not be available.

With camping becoming a more popular travel option in recent years, more than 1,900 campsites are currently available across the country, and the number of camping enthusiasts has grown to more than 6 million.

Naturally, the camping industry is growing at a rapid rate of 20~30% every year. In 2018, the camping industry stood at KRW 2.6 trillion in total value (32% growth compared to KRW 2 trillion in 2017).

This remarkable growth rate of the camping industry is due to a combination of factors: a more segmented leisure market, an increase in demand for tourism options tailored to families, an increase in demand for immersive tourism featuring walks through beaches and forests, and government (central and local) policies to build more campsites.

Also notable is the fact that the camping and leisure tourism market began growing at an even faster rate since the outbreak of COVID-19. Going forward, competition between local governments and private operators to attract campers and tourists looking for leisure activities is expected to intensify.

In particular, beachside auto camping, where travelers can camp by the sea and enjoy a relaxing break, is emerging as a popular trend in camping.

Beach caravans and auto campsites are bringing in more travelers since they offer access to leisure activities by the sea, which means reservations are very hard to come by.

In line with these camping trends, Gyeongsangbuk-do is adding campsites to its beaches to use as resources for tourism and recreation throughout the year. Now, visitors can relax, heal, and make invaluable memories at Gyeongsangbuk-do’s beaches with the added option of camping.

The Head of the Maritime and Fishery Bureau at Gyeongsangbuk-do, said, We will make full use of our natural environment along our eastern seaboard to build the perfect camping infrastructure sufficient enough to attract campers and make Gyeongsangbuk-do a hub for the camping industry.
