History

Gyeongsangbuk-do

  • Jinhan was one of the three Hans who lived before Christ and who settled in Gyeongsangbuk-do. His rule became the base of the Silla Kingdom, with its brilliant culture. The 1,000-year kingdom flourished and unified the three prior kingdoms.
  • Our region was named Gyeongsang-do in 1314 (the first year of King Chungsuks reign in the Goryeo dynasty). When the area was reorganized into 13 provinces in 1896 (the 33rd year of King Gojongs reign in the Joseon dynasty), our region was renamed “Gyeongsangbuk-do.” The present administrative districts were organized with the bu, gun, and myeon reorganization in 1914.

  • August 1896The province was named “Gyeongsangbuk-do” according to the 13-province system.
  • March 1914The bu-gun-myeon system was put in place (1 bu, 22 guns, 1 do)
  • August 1949Daegu, Pohang, and Gimcheon were promoted to the status of cities. Ulleung-do was renamed “Ulleung-gun” and included 3 cities and 23 guns.
  • January 1963Uljin-gun was merged with Gangwon-do
  • April 1966Uljin-gun was merged with Gangwon-do.
  • June 1981Daegu was promoted to the status of a city directly controlled by the government and separated from Gyeongsangbuk-do.
  • January 1989Gyeongsan-eup was promoted to the status of a city. (There were 10 cities and 24 guns.)
  • January 199510 cities and 13 guns were created through the integration of cities and guns.
  • March 1995Dalseong-gun was merged with Daegu Metropolitan City.
  • July 1995The first self-governing administration elected by popular vote (Governor Lee Eui-geun) was re-installed, and the 5th Provincial Council was established.
  • July 1998The first self-governing administration elected by popular vote (Governor Lee Eui-geun) was re-installed, and the 6th Provincial Council was established.
  • July 2002The first self-governing administration elected by popular vote (Governor Lee Eui-geun) was re-installed, and the 7th Provincial Council was established.
  • July 2006The second self-governing administration elected by popular vote (Governor Kim Kwan-yong) was installed, and the 8th Provincial Council was established.
  • July 2010The second self-governing administration elected by popular vote (Governor Kim Kwan-yong) was re-installed, and the 9th Provincial Council was established.
