On February 27, 2019 (Wednesday), Gyeongsangbuk-do announced that it signed an MOU for investment promotion together with Gyeongju City, Gangdong Energy, Nemo Energy, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and Korea Western Power regarding the creation of a “hydrogen fuel cell power plant” worth KRW 1.4 trillion
at the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Office.
In cooperation with Gangdong Energy, Nemo ENG, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and Korea Western Power that will serve as developers, Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to establish a 200 MW hydrogen fuel cell power plant through the first and second stages of development from 2019 to 2023 within the Gangdong Industrial Complex in Gyeongju City. It will have the largest scale among hydrogen fuel cell power plants in Korea.
The power plant will generate 1,647 GWh of electricity annually that is equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 500,000 households per year, half of the annual electricity use of the 3 million population in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and the electricity amount that can be used by Gyeongju citizens for five years.
Hydrogen fuel cell power plant is an environment-friendly, distributed-type power production facility set up within the city center. It separates hydrogen from natural gas and reacts it with oxygen collected from the air to generate electricity. Such power plants have been established in the downtown areas of Seoul and Busan, and are regarded as a smoke-free, clean energy production facility with high generating efficiency. In terms of the generating conditions, they have the advantage of not being confined to a certain time or natural environment, unlike solar or wind power.
Gangdong Energy and Nemo ENG promised to make the utmost use of businesses, workforce, and equipment within Gyeongju throughout the development and operation of the project and pledged to create 240 jobs and hire local talent preferentially. Moreover, areas nearby Gangdong in Gyeongju will receive a basic subsidy of KRW 30 million and a special subsidy of KRW 21 billion, or 1.5% of the investment amount, every year, that will contribute to the revitalization of the local economy.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo stated that “ever since the government’s announcement on the hydrogen economy promotion roadmap having the two central pillars of ‘hydrogen vehicle’ and ‘fuel cell,’ governmental policies on expanding renewable energy have been carried out, inducing a large number of companies to jump into relevant businesses.” He also said that “this project has great significance as the Gyeongsangbuk-do’s first ever large-scale hydrogen fuel investment.”
He added that “when the expansion of inter-Korean exchange leads to the ing of the age of the east coast, Gyeongsangbuk-do that has a geographical advantage suitable to import natural gas from Russia will make the best use of such advantage to become the central hub of the hydrogen economy.”
Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to its capabilities on giving administrative support for companies to actively attract environment-friendly energy, manufacturing, and tourism /leisure service industries and, in turn, create jobs and contribute to the reinvigoration of the local economy.
