On November 24, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Government held the “Conference for Revitalizing the Investment Promotion in the Service Industry in the Northern Region” at the provincial government office building, with aro 20 officials in charge of investment promotion and forestry projects across six cities and counties.
* The six areas are Yeongju, Sangju, Mungyeong, Yecheon, Bonghwa, and Uljin.
The conference aims to develop and share ideas about specialized local tourism projects in connection with the East–West Trail Project, which covers trails with a total length of 275 km between Sangju and Uljin, thereby developing specific plans for the project and ensuring systematic preparations to establish the trails as a prestigious trekking destination on par with the Camino de Santiago and utilize the trails as a growth engine for the local tourism industry.

With two-thirds of the lands covered with forests, the northern region of Gyeongsangbuk-do is characterized by a disproportioned industrial structure concentrated on agriculture and forestry, relatively low-income levels, and largely poor economic foations.
To address these issues, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Government looked into various ways to secure new growth engines for the northern region, which led to an initiative for investment promotion linked with the Gyeongsangbuk-do East-West Trail Project.
The initiative constitutes a part of the local government’s efforts to maximize the effect of the relevant policies by aligning its investment promotion efforts with the general direction of its local administration.
During the conference, the attendees proposed and discussed various projects, including the attraction and development of tourist hotels within the Punggi Spa District in Yeongju, “albergues” (accommodations or hostels for travelers) for trekkers and pilgrims visiting Mungyeong, and the Samgangjumak Hill Stay in Yecheon.

Utilizing the ideas from the conference, the provincial government plans to meet with major domestic, medium, and large enterprises in tourism, leisure, and development and international hotel and resort corporations for full-fledged promotion activities.
In addition, the local government will provide policy-d assistance required for commercialization in consultation with the relevant departments.
Aside from having the conference, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Government has been engaged in erse activities to revitalize the northern regions. For example, the local government sent Hwang Jung-ha, Head of the Investment Promotion Office, to promote manufacturing and investment in the northern areas at a seminar held on November 3. This engagement was followed by a conference with food-related firms in the northern region on November 16 to identify challenges faced by the businesses and stimulate investments in the areas.
Mr. Hwang Jung-ha said, “The geographical conditions of the northern areas make it difficult to promote local service industries.” However, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting service industries in the areas saying, “Building on the areas’ rich forestry and trekking resources, we will be able to turn the northern region into a new central axis for local tourism industries by developing the unique tourism potential of the areas and coming up with systematic plans to support those efforts.”
